An unusual but exhilarating physical education class.
When Kyle Shuman, 10, Pottsville, first heard kayaking would become part of his gym class at D.H.H. Lengel Middle School, he was thrilled.
I like it a lot, he said Wednesday afternoon after spending an hour in the pool with his classmates. It s fun, exciting, and I get to be with my friends.
Kayaking was introduced to the middle school students this year as a part of Pottsville Project Fit. In 2005, the U.S. Department of Education awarded the city s Barefield Development Corp. a three-year physical education program, or PEP, grant.
The idea behind the PEP grant is to promote lifelong fitness in the physical education classes at the D.H.H. Lengel Middle School and the All Saints Catholic School, targeting fifth- and eighth-graders, said Jenny Wagner, project director of Pottsville Project Fit. And we also are linking fitness and the concepts of fitness that students are learning in school with their families.
Kayaking was chosen, according to Wagner, because of the possibility of it becoming a lifelong activity.
And one of the concepts was to help students enjoy lifelong physical activity that maybe they wouldn t have access to otherwise, she said. So having the pool here is amazing in itself, and with the capability of placing inflatable kayaks in it so the students can learn the proper techniques so that they can maybe pursue the activity outside of school is just a wonderful opportunity for them.
Health and physical education teacher John Carr is in his first year of teaching with the district.
During the first days they said they were thinking of getting kayaks, and right away I was like, sign me up! Carr said.
Along with some help from his cousin, Craig Kleckner, Pottsville, the two avid kayakers and three other physical education teachers have taught middle school students the proper techniques of the sport and the importance of life jackets, which each student must wear before entering the pool.
On Wednesday, Carr was observing how well the students in his class worked together.
From here I ll see where I need to go with preparing them for lakes and rivers, he said.
It s good activity for physical education, Kleckner said. It s a full workout with upper and lower body. Plus it s something different.
The students kayaked nonstop Wednesday.
It s 100 percent participation, that s for sure, Carr said.
The fifth-grade boys seem to agree on their favorite kayaking activity, although they may not realize how handy it could become.
They like flipping the kayak over, Carr said. I only let them flip over once a class, but if you flip in a river or a lake and you re not comfortable flipping, it s going to be very scary.
Although Dylan Tower, 10, of Pottsville, was a little apprehensive with the new activity at first, he now likes it.
I like tipping over, Tower said Wednesday.
Out of the 21 kayaks purchased, 13 seat two people and eight are single-seaters.
Ten kayaks fit comfortable in the pool, Wagner said.

Barefield Development Corporation, the Pottsville Housing Authority, the Pottsville Area School District and Pottsville Project Fit are pleased to announce that indoor cycling classes will begin at the McGeever Community Center on Tuesday, Nov. 27 and are free to the residents of the Pottsville Area School District.
Indoor cycling is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle. As you pedal, motivating music plays and the instructor talks you through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout. During the class you vary your pace.
Indoor cycling burns serious calories about 450 in 45 minutes and offers an awesome aerobic workout that makes hearts pump fast. It also tones your quadriceps and outer thigh muscles.
The classes will take place every Tuesday from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. and will be taught by an experienced, certified instructor. Time will be taken at the beginning of each class to learn proper bike setup procedures and biking techniques. Seven indoor cycles are available and seven registrants and two alternatives will be accepted. Each interested person is asked to call 628-5079 to register for each class.
