Three area CEOs found more than they expected Thursday at the Greenwood YMCA.

Self Regional Healthcare CEO Jim Pfeiffer, Lander University President Dan Ball and YMCA CEO Gray Stallworth arrived at the Y lobby for a photoshoot and triathlon demonstration to show their support for exercise and a healthy lifestyle. What they found was a bit of friendly competition.

We ve been had, Dr. Ball. These guys are here to compete against us, Stallworth said as the Lander president walked into the lobby. The original idea was that the three of us were going to do this real easy, now we re going to have people going against us.

But the CEOs did have an advantage: The challengers had to double any distance they went. When Ball ran a half mile, his challenger ran a mile.

First up, Stallworth put his skills up against Lander student Cameron Dorn in the pool.

Stallworth tagged avid cyclist Pfeiffer for the next leg of the competition, and Pfeiffer faced Dr. Dave Sealy, director of Self s Sports Medicine Center. Although he calls himself a casual jogger rather than an enthusiastic runner, Ball took the final stretch of the triathlon, facing cross country competitor and Lander student Allison Daniel.

In a close race, the CEOs barely beat out the challengers, who didn t seem too disappointed with their second-place finish.

Our goal is for Greenwood to be healthy. We want as many people in the community as we can exercising and getting active, Sealy said. This is fun.

The competition helped represent the commitment the sponsors of the Greenwood Shrinkdown to St. Patty s Day -- the YMCA, Lander and Self Regional -- to promoting an active lifestyle.

We feel like we re doing the right thing -- getting people thinking about being active and having someone to hold them accountable to exercise, Stallworth said. That s what we did here, we re a team, keeping each other accountable.

More than 200 people continue to attend weekly weigh-ins as part of the Shrinkdown, and Stallworth and Janada Jay, YMCA senior program director, reminded those at the triathlon that the weekly health talks are still being conducted at 6 p.m. each Thursday.

(Shrinkdown) has been very successful this year. We ve had a very high retention rate, and we re looking forward to the celebration March 19, she said. We hope to continue to do something to keep everyone interested in keeping it going, being active and being healthy. Today was a lot of fun, and it s all about enjoying being healthy.
