The thyroid gland is located in the neck, just around the Adam's apple area. It is a butterfly-shaped organ responsible for metabolism.

The thyroid gland should be smooth and most times should not be able to be felt by the physician. If the thyroid is felt, the physician will note that the thyroid is palpable. Once this is noted, the physician will check it to be sure there are no lumps in the gland. When a lump is found in the thyroid gland, it is known as a thyroid nodule.

It is estimated that approximately 10 percent of adults have thyroid nodules. These are seen primarily in women but also can occur in men. Middle-aged men and women are more prone to thyroid nodules than those who are younger.

If a physician feels a thyroid nodule, some more testing will be ordered. The usual test for a nodule is called a thyroid ultrasound. This is a painless test that uses ultrasound technology rather than X-rays.

The physician also will want to do blood work to see if this nodule or thyroid is functioning appropriately.

Most thyroid nodules are not cancerous; however, on occasion, thyroid nodules can be cancerous.

Once a thyroid nodule is found and testing is done, some patients might require a test known as a fine-needle aspiration. This will be done by an endocrinologist. The purpose of this test is to take a small portion of the thyroid nodule and examine it under a microscope.

Anyone who feels a lump in the throat around the Adam's apple or any area of the neck should see a physician for a complete evaluation.

Dr. Gordon J. Rafool is a specialist in family practice and geriatrics at Gessler Clinic in Winter Haven.
