Kateryna Kotlyarevska began work last month as New Hanover Regional Medical Center's first pediatric endocrinologist, the first of several specialists being recruited to the hospital to treat more childhood diseases locally.
Kotlyarevska said recently in her office at the hospital's new Nunnelee Pediatric Clinic. 'Some of them drive to UNC, Duke. Some go to adult endocrinologists if they're teenagers. They just couldn't accommodate more patients in this clinic because they didn't have a provider.'
Pediatric endocrinologists specialize in treating children with growth, puberty thyroid disorders and other hormonal diseases.
The subspecialty covers a variety of conditions, but diabetes makes up about 60 percent of the cases, Kotlyarevska said.
'We don't see long-term complications in children, but it's a big impact when they grow up,' she said.
Kotlyarevska is from the Ukraine, where she graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy.
She went through a residency in pediatrics, focusing on adolescent medicine and growth and puberty disorders.
In 2003, Kotlyarevska and her husband immigrated to the United States after getting slots in the Green Card Lottery.
Kotlyarevska had previous experience in the American medical system while working as an exchange medical student in Rochester, N.Y. in 1996.
After moving permanently to the United States, Kotlyarevska returned to New York for a general pediatrics residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse.
In October, Kotlyarevska completed a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at the University of Michigan and soon after accepted the job in Wilmington, where she is considered a faculty member at UNC because of the hospital's arrangement with the college.
'I did go for an interview at UNC, and they proposed me to take this position (at New Hanover Regional),' she said. 'I'm basically faculty of UNC but work primarily here to deliver care to the children in this area because my understanding is a lot of areas in North Carolina are underserved by specialists, the Coastal areas and Eastern part.'
