Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education - Endocrinology ... Aaron Selber Jr. and his wife, Peggy, along with other donors, have pledged $40,000 to create a professorship in honor of Dr. Steve Levine, chief of the medical school's endocrinology and metabolism section.

LSU Health Sciences Foundation is working to raise another $20,000. Then the foundation will use the total of $60,000 to receive $40,000 in matching money from the Louisiana Board of Regents to create a $100,000 endowment for the professorship.

Levine first treated Aaron Selber Jr. 11 years ago for a thyroid problem. Selber visits Levine every three months for checkups and blood tests.

Selber recalled that he started having vision problems and losing weight with no apparent cause at age 70.

"I thought I had cancer, because you don't lose weight in December, not with all those Christmas parties," Selber said. "It turned out my thyroid was overactive. Steve found it and treated it through medication."

Selber said he checked Levine's reputation and looked around at other specialists before heading to LSUHSC. He said he prefers to be treated locally and considers the care he gets at the Shreveport center the equal of care anywhere in the country.

"I think he's a doctor's doctor type of guy," Selber said of Levine. "He's a low-key person. I wanted to recognize a humble man who gives much more than he takes and doesn't really ask for recognition."

Levine said the endowed professorship will help provide expanded learning opportunities for medical students.

"It's potentially to bring nationally recognized endocrinologists to Shreveport as visiting professors," he said.

Levine came to LSUHSC after finishing a fellowship in endocrinology 30 years ago. Diabetes and thyroid disorders are the most common problems endocrinologists treat, he said.

"It's a specialty that allows you to develop long-term relationships with patients," he said. "Most of the diseases we deal with are diseases of deficiencies or excesses of normal hormones."

Levine said endocrinology, like other specialties, has benefited from an increase in the understanding of the molecular basis of disease since he started practicing. He's also seen an increase in the number of medications available to treat endocrine-related disorders.

Besides teaching, Levine sees patients admitted to LSU Hospital in Shreveport and takes referrals for other patients.

"My tenure at the medical school has been very rewarding for me," Levine said. "I enjoy teaching."
