How You Can Stop HCV from Leading to Gallstones
View PDF | Print View
Gallstones, no matter the size, can be quite painful, and may require hospitalization in more severe cases. The gallbladder's primary function is to store bile produced by the liver, and aid in the digestion and absorption of fat. If the bile is chemically unbalanced, or contains too much cholesterol, it forms hard particles that eventually turn into stones. With gallstone disease becoming more common each year, those infected with the Hepatitis C virus are at an even greater risk of an attack. Some people may not even know they have gallstones because they don't exhibit any symptoms. On the other hand, those who experience gallstone "attacks" can be stricken with severe abdominal and back pain, as well as nausea and vomiting. Most attacks occur after having recently eaten very fatty meals, and are usually preceded by bloating, gas and indigestion. Western medicine has proposed that those with liver disease, specifically Hepatitis C, are more likely to develop gallstones. In fact, numerous studies have been conducted attempting to prove this theory. The link between these two diseases is the liver. The gallbladder and the liver work together to eliminate toxins from the body, so naturally, if the liver's capacity to function is impaired due to Hepatitis C, it won't be able to do it's part. Making some slight changes to your daily routine can help lower the risk of gallbladder disease. Cut down on the amount of fatty foods in your diet, substituting them with those high in fiber such as fruits and vegetables. Get your body moving; studies have shown that the heavier you are, the more likely you are to develop gallstones, and regular exercise may lower your risk. Simple behavior and lifestyle adjustments can be a great help in the prevention of gallstones. Those with hepatitis should take these extra precautions to ensure the health of these very important organs.
