You can see and taste for yourself during Louisville's Greek Festival 2008 produced by about 80 members of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
The 20th annual festival opens today and expects to delight more than 20,000 visitors with Greek music, costumed dancers, gift booths and a luscious array of food and pastries through Sunday on the Belvedere in downtown Louisville.
Tables will be set up under a huge tent for dining, relaxing, dancing, live music and protection from inclement weather. Wine, beer and soft drinks will be sold.
Once again, Lee Nourtsis and his Neo Ehos Band from Cincinnati will take center stage playing lively bouzouki music. The Pegasus Dancers -- a local, authentically costumed troupe -- also will perform.
Of course, the highlight of the festival is the taste of Greece with all the Mediterranean trimmings. The motto is "There's only one Greek restaurant in Louisville but it's only open three days a year."
This "restaurant" will serve those aforementioned dishes plus more recognizable fare that includes gyro sandwiches ($5.50), lamb shank dinner ($11, with salad, rice and green beans), Greek salad with feta cheese and olives ($2 small and $3 large), baked chicken with beans or rice ($4) and baklava ($2).
These are among the traditional dishes:
Moussaka, $4, a layered dish with ground beef, eggplant and potatoes.
Pastitsio, $4, a Greek-style macaroni casserole with seasoned ground beef and a light cheese sauce.
Dolmathes, $3, for three grape leaves stuffed with ground beef and rice. A meatless version costs $3.50 for five.
Spanakopita, $2.50, phyllo stuffed with spinach and feta cheese.
Karidopita, $1.50, walnut cake soaked in honey.
Returning for another high-caloric obstacle to your diet are the baklava sundaes ($3.50) made with vanilla ice cream massaged by pieces of honey-rich and nutty baklava.
"Culturally, Greeks display their affection or appreciation through food, with large portions and lots of laughter," said Emily Digenis, church member and festival spokeswoman, who has helped roll 7,000 dolmathes for the festival.
Organizers are quick to point out that despite the high cost of fuel and food, menu prices and portions have remained the same as last year.
Other festival attractions include a Greek grocery store, children's activities and arts and crafts displays.
