The participants in the Lose a Pound and Gain Competition showed off the fruits of their labor at a ceremony held at Jamaica Hospital s Trump Pavilion on Tuesday evening.
Sixteen families from Queens and Brooklyn, each with at least one overweight child, participated in the program, which was sponsored by Neighborhood Health Providers. The goal was to educate, reward and motivate progress towards a less fattening diet.
The grand prize winner was the Washington family of South Jamaica. Husband and wife Marvin and Danielle Washington, along with their two children, Marasia and Bobby, lost a grand total of 41 pounds. They received a trophy, passes to Six Flags amusement park and a large fruit basket.
It was a hard 10 weeks, but it was a good 10 weeks, because it was very educational for me and my children, Danielle Washington said. It was important to me healthwise because I am a diabetic and also with changing our eating habits. We were eating very poorly Chinese food, greasy food, anything we wanted, and it wasn t healthy.
Washington said she and her family have learned that they can still enjoy their favorite foods in moderation and that she spends more time preparing meals so the family doesn t have to eat out as much.
The second place winner was the Beer family of South Ozone Park. Husband and wife Tulsie and Bibi Beer, along with their children, Alex and Shabina, lost 29 pounds. They also received a trophy and large fruit basket.
The program was hard, but I got through it, Alex Beer said. I thank school because we get to go outside and they give us vegetables and salads and everything. The best part about it was this, for all that work you get a prize.
Over the course of the program, the project s registered dietician, Paola Puig, gave the participants helpful tips such as walking more and reducing their consumption of fast food and sugary drinks.
It wasn t with a big goal in mind that you are going to lose 10 pounds and never put it back, Puig said. It was about modifying your lifestyle so you have better eating habits, a better daily routine.
The families received nutritional data sheets in the mail each week on topics including how to select healthier options at popular fast food restaurants and how to avoiding fattening dishes at Thanksgiving dinner. Participants received measuring cups and learned about portion control. The family that lost the most weight each week received a $10 gift card to Old Navy.
We tried to increase their activity level, Puig said. We gave them hula hoops and jump ropes things that would fit in their environment, because research shows if they maintain that activity level, they will continue to sustain their weight loss.
During the ceremony, the sponsors phoned the Emanuel School in Randwick, Sydney, Australia, a country whose residents are also battling obesity, according to the school s nurse, Rebecca Carter. The purpose was to show the families that they are not alone in their struggle. Students, Ethan, 8, and Eliza, 7, congratulated the competition s winners.
Participants were selected from one of five healthcare facilities Jamaica Medisys Medical of Sutphin, MediSys of Ozone Park, MediSys East New York, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center Family Practice and Jamaica Hospital Ambulatory Care Center. Everyone who took part in the project received a certificate and fruit basket.
Patricia Savage, confidential assistant to state Sen. Shirley Huntley (D-Jamaica), also gave participants awards on behalf of the lawmaker. Each one read, For due diligence in successfully completing the Lose a Pound and Gain Competition. Be it resolved as a duly elected member of the New York State Senate, I recognize that we have an individual worthy of honor and esteem.
