Most know what dandruff is and it's best to start off by busting some myths. Most sources will tell you that your dandruff is as a result of your scalp being very dry. They will give advice that you should skip washing your hair or even worse, stop using shampoos. Some shampoos are not good for the hair or your scalp and you should steer clear of them. But regular cleaning and shampooing your scalp will regulate dandruff. Our cells are constantly getting renewed and the old ones are always being tossed out and when this happens on our scalps at a faster rate, then we get dandruff otherwise known as scurf or Pityriasis simplex capillitii. What a name!
Dandruff can be embarrassing due to constant itching and making wearing dark shirts impossible. Imagine putting on a black shirt and you have heavy dandruff! Everyone will notice.
Factors that influence dandruff
Although we all shed skin, there are factors that speed up the shedding process e.g. fungal infections (Pityrosporum ovale), head lice or Seborrheic Dermatitis. It is also believed that those with oily skin are prone to dandruff.
How you can get treat dandruff at home.
Hot water and coconut oil
Apply the coconut oil on your scalp with your fingers making sure it is distributed everywhere then rinse your head under hot water for around 10 -15 mins. Repeat this regularly until you are cured.
Aloe Vera shampoo
Aloe Vera can be used to treat various infections dandruff inclusive. You can apply pure aloe Vera on the scalp, mixed with lime juice and olive oil. Let it settle on the scalp as you massage it with your finger tips and rinse with hot water. Repeat every day until the dandruff clears.
Vinegar
If your dandruff results from fungal infection, then vinegar will get rid of the oil eating fungus (Pityrosporum Ovale). White vinegar will do. Apply it while massaging into your scalp then cover with a towel overnight, rise in the morning with a herbal shampoo preferably one with tea tree extracts and you will see result within days. If you don't have vinegar, apple cider vinegar works fine.
It's advisable to find out what could be accelerating the shedding of skin cells on your scalp before trying any remedy. Seborrheic Dermatitis is common to people who suffer from HIV and this requires special attention.
Lastly a healthy diet will keep your scalp healthy and dandruff free.
