Men with depression 'failing to ask for help' during recession

One in three men with depression and anxiety feel embarrassed about asking for help claims a mental health charity that says the problem is even more acute during the recession.

Even though men and women experience mental health problems in roughly equal numbers, men are much less likely to be diagnosed and treated for it, claim MIND.

If men do not seek help they can be left in a very vulnerable situation, claims MIND with them accounting for 75 per cent of all suicides.

The charity says it is becoming increasingly important to get men to open up as the worries about jobs are pushing many of them to suicidal thoughts.

By bottling things up, mental distress can get much worse, said the charity. In addition, some men may vent their distress by getting angry, becoming violent or self-medicating with alcohol or drugs.

The top issue playing on the minds of men is job security, according to the YouGov survey of 2,055 adults commissioned by mental health charity MIND.

Paul Farmer, Mind's chief executive, said: "The recession is clearly having a detrimental impact on the nation's mental health but men in particular are struggling with the emotional impact.

"Being a breadwinner is something that is still crucial to the male psyche so if a man loses his job he loses a large part of his identity putting his mental wellbeing in jeopardy.

"The problem is that too many men wrongly believe that admitting mental distress makes them weak and this kind of self stigma can cost lives.

"At this time, it's really important that it's as easy as possible for men to find the help they need."
