The stories of Drew Niles and Austin Hills, who have been selected as Kid Captains for the University of Iowa football team, as well as Lucas Lacina, give us some insight about how West Branch families have dealt with sickness and disability so great that a child would be changed forever.
For Drew, it was being born with a ring 4 chromosome, that, to oversimplify, stunted his growth. For Austin, he would lose an eye to cancer. For Lucas, a shortage of oxygen at birth would leave him struggling with cerebral palsy.
The struggles these families faced, though, cannot be captured in words. Fear and uncertainty are emotions that can take their toll just over a few days, but how do people handle that when it goes on for weeks, or months? How many questions needed to be answered? And how many times did they lose sleep? How many times did the stress get to them?

No one wants to see a friend or neighbor face these challenges, much more to go through it themselves. Before Drew and Lucas were born, and before Austin felt that pain in his eye, they and their families were neighbors, friends, classmates, co-workers, brothers, sisters, etc. Since then, they have become part of an unenviable group of families who, at no choice of their own, had to endure great hardship.
But the fact that they did so, and that they are 'one of us,' should serve as an encouragement to others who will face such hardships in the future.
Imagine the wisdom, humility and patience these families have developed
