United Cerebral Palsy Delrey School's speaker series to address special needs topics begins May 27 with a lecture on cortical visual impairment, the leading cause of visual impairment in young children.
Sandra Newcomb, a technical assistance specialist for the University of Maryland's Department of Special Education, will discuss the condition, which prevents the brain from consistently understanding and interpreting what the eye sees and suggest modifications for the home and classroom to help children with it.
The talk is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. at the school, 3610 Commerce Drive, off Washington Boulevard, in Lansdowne.
Newcomb specializes in family support and cortical visual impairment.
She earned her doctorate at the University of Maryland and holds certifications in early childhood special education and visual impairment.
She also teaches the visually impaired in Prince George's County.
Those attending the series will have the opportunity to tour the school's new, state-of-the-art building, which includes classrooms; special areas for occupational, speech and physical therapies; a sensory integration room, computer lab and wheelchair clinic.
Registration for the presentation is required and costs $25.
The quarterly speaker series is to help those working with special needs children to stay up to date on developments in the field.
"Our primary focus at UCP Delrey School is providing educational and therapeutic services for children with multiple disabilities, and we want to further that mission with a community dialogue that advances special needs education," Delrey School assistant principal Terri Clark said. "The speaker series serves both professionals and parents as a practical and affordable resource."
