Biggest health challenge: Finding the time for biking. I love mountain biking and triathlons, but do those less frequently because of the time involved.
Exercise routine: In the winter, I go to the gym three to four times a week for spinning and weight lifting/cardio classes. The rest of the year, I still go to the gym for weight lifting/cardio but am mostly outside riding my road bike. I am a member of the Macatawa Cycling Club and take part in rides throughout the week, usually 25 to 40 miles on average. I also ride in the Holland 100 in July and the Color Burst in October. I do two to three races a year, sometimes including triathlons. I've done several sprint tri's in Ludington and Grand Haven, as well as Lake Macatawa and Reed's Lake triathlons. Sometimes, I test my speed a few times in the summer at the Grattan Race Series. My favorite race is a 28-mile mountain bike race in November in Kalkaska.
Exercise tip: Try new things that get your heart rate up and make you sweat. I don't exercise for the health benefits, I exercise because of the emotional and mental outlet it provides. My family can always tell when I haven't exercised in a few days; I get crabby.
Eating plan: The great thing about exercising a lot is I don't need to worry much about what I'm eating. Since I started biking, I've lost 20 pounds and weigh less than I did in college. I focus on what kinds of food I eat mainly when I have a big ride or race coming up.
Guilty pleasure foods: A juicy blue cheese burger, a chili dog, a peanut butter malt, a bowl of ice cream before bed and pizza late on a Saturday night
Favorite healthy foods: I love to mix granola, plain yogurt, fresh fruit, nuts and honey.
Breakfast today: Scrambled eggs, bacon, sharp cheddar cheese and salsa wrapped in a warm tortilla
Daily doses: Occasionally, I take a multivitamin, calcium with Vitamin D and Vitamin C. I take zinc if I am getting a cold.
