University Village will host its sixth annual Shop to Make a Difference event May 15-17, and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Purchase a Cure Card ($25) at www.fhcrc.org, participating stores and restaurants, or the FHCRC booth (located during the event near Fireworks and Sole Food), and enjoy 20 percent off at more than 50 University Village venues.
Participating stores include Anthropologie, Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand, Something Silver, Banana Republic, Ravenna Gardens, The Confectionery, Barnes & Noble, Mercer, Paint the Town, Village Maternity and Zovo Lingerie. In addition, Crate & Barrel will donate five percent of housewares sales and Glassybaby will donate 10 percent of their total sales during the event.
University Village weekend hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
In 2008, Shop to Make a Difference raised more than $35,000 for women's cancer research. With the help of the University Village proceeds, the Center's Dr. Connie Lehman conducted a study that found that an MRI scan greatly improves the early secondary diagnosis of women who have already had breast cancer.
She is currently looking for new ways to fine-tune the use of MRI screenings to bring early detection to women at high risk for breast cancer. Meanwhile, Dr. Anne McTiernan focuses on cancer-prevention research by examining the link between daily habits and cancer.
