Annual breast cancer walk finishes today EXETER - Breast cancer has touched many on the Seacoast, and a group of local women have committed to do their part in the fight against the disease.

Emily Persing of Portsmouth, Whitney Blethen of Kittery, Maine, Janice Szydlo of North Hampton, Ginger Mathews of Stratham and Amy Jones of Lee have joined forces to create the "Seacoast Boulder Brigade," a breast cancer 3-day walking team with the goal of raising $20,000 for the cause.

"I decided to do the breast cancer 3-day because I wanted to challenge myself and get in better shape," said Mathews. "As soon as I walked into the initial meeting I realized that I was not only taking on a great physical challenge, but also doing something bold and committing to a cause that will change the lives of others along with my own."

On Wednesday, July 24, each team member will begin a 60-mile walk in Boston over the course of three days, camping out with thousands of other men and women who are committing to do what they can to end breast cancer forever.

Net proceeds from this walk will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, which fund important breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.

Since its inception in 1982, the Susan G. Komen organization has awarded more than 1,100 breast cancer research grants totaling more than $400 million. With $1 billion invested to date, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage - from the causes, to the cures, to the pain and anxiety of every moment in between.

"We've already walked 1,570 miles and will walk 3,225 miles by the end of our training," said Persing.

As captain, Persing has coordinated and led training walks, along with providing support and encouragement to her team members.

The team's support was especially helpful to Blethen. In April, she lost her sister-in-law, Sharon Raymond, to the disease.

"I was amazed at how, in such a short time, this beautiful group of women became such a tremendous support for me," she said. "Now we are all walking in memory of Sharon."

The event has even become a family affair as Blethen's seven-year-old niece, Grace Raymond, the daughter of her sister-in-law who died, raised more than $200 with a pink lemonade stand earlier this spring.

The lemonade stand was held in conjunction with Seacoast Boulder Brigade's yard sale, which raised about $2,400.

Another fund-raiser, a benefit night, is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, at the Portsmouth Gas Light Co. Along with live music on the patio, there will be several prizes for guests to bid on throughout the evening.

The restaurant will donate a portion of the proceeds from the cover charge that evening to assist the team in fund-raising.

"As cancer touches more lives each year, we are simply doing our part to help the world get one step closer to a cure. We are truly honored to be part of this event," said Travis Glazer, marketing and creative director of the Portsmouth Gas Light Co.

Seacoast Boulder Brigade is also sponsoring the Bee-Pop Flip Flop Sale which is ongoing. The flip-flops are available in 12 different styles in whole sizes from 7 to 10, by e-mailing seacoastboulder@gmail.com.
