Prof gets $361000 grant for breast cancer study

An Eastern Michigan University researcher has received a $361,000 National Cancer Institute grant to help with breast cancer detection and prevention among Asian-American women.
The two-year grant, EMU's first award of federal stimulus funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will help address the need for communiations tailored to increase mammography screening among Asian American women.
"While Caucasian women are screened at a rate of 75 percent, only about 50 percent of Asian-Americans are screened for breast cancer,'' said Professor Tsu-Yin Wu.
Boosting the percentage of women screened is important for long-term breast-cancer survival rates, Wu said. "If detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 96 percent,'' she said. Eight percent of Washtenaw County's residents, or about 28,000 people, are Asian, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. "Over the years we have encountered such tremendous demand from this underserved population,'' Wu said.
The money will be used to help develop an individually tailored telephone-counseling program. Participants - the goal is to have 240 - will get an individualized session to address various barriers to and misconceptions about breast cancer screening. The ultimate goal is to find a method that will reduce screening disparities and eventually save more lives.
