Diets that are low carb or even completely anti-carb are now among the most popular diets around. The notion that you should eat lots of protein and hardly any carbohydrates wasn't very widespread until the Atkins Diet came along. People suddenly started trying to give up all carbohydrate foods and while they did lose weight, they found that once they indulged in even a tiny bit of carbohydrate based sustenance, the weight all came back. The fact is, you need some carbs to stay healthy.

Since carbohydrates are necessary to give your body energy, you can't feel your best without them. What you want to focus on is eating moderate amounts of healthy carbs. Here are a few ways to do that.

No matter what diet you try, if you do one that is based on eating no carbohydrates, lots of meat will be your main course for your meals. Even though the same nutrients are in carb based foods, for some reason these diets advocate only eating meats to get the nutrients. Of all the problems caused by having too much meat in your diet, the worst are raising your cholesterol, as well as increasing the possibility of heart disease. Eat beef, chicken, pork and seafood in moderation-the same as you would with any other health plan. If you want to mess up your body, just overeat for a while. If your diet is high in processed foods, try switching to more natural foods. Since processed foods are usually high in unhealthy carbs, people who are used to these have to work extra hard when they try to adhere to a low carb diet. To change their diet, they may start shopping for low calorie or low carb foods of the packaged and processed variety. The problem with most of these low carb processed meals is that they make you want to eat more carbohydrates, so you're tempted to abandon your diet. Foods that are natural, however, are more nutritious and satisfying. If you want quick energy, for example, try eating some cashews or almonds rather than a diet product with an artificial sweetener that causes you to crash twenty minutes later.

Low carb diets are popular with some people because they love meat and look forward to being able to eat more of it. While it is true you have more room in your diet for calories obtained from meat, you do need to watch what kind of meat you eat. Eating lots of hamburgers and bacon, for example, isn't the best thing for you. Organic or natural meats, as well as fish, can be a healthy source of protein. Natural varieties of chicken, turkey or salmon are among your best choices when it comes to meat or fish. To eat a healthy diet, you have to pay attention when you're shopping or ordering. A low carb diet puts some limits on you, but you still have lots of choices. At first, it may appear that eating fewer carbohydrates is difficult, even painful. When you study the matter, you'll find it's not so hard. All you have to do is find low carb foods to replace some of the high carb ones. You've probably overlooked many of these foods until now. If you're having trouble figuring out how to get started, talk to you doctor or a nutritionist. He or she will provide you with guidance.
