A mother will do anything she can to protect her children. We keep them away from sick people and make sure they are warm enough in winter and cool enough in summer. Motherhood is a delightful challenge that we win sometimes and lose sometimes. It is a job loaded with responsibility, love and anguish.
Children who are frightened or injured will cry out for mommy. Mommy will administer tender loving care, a kiss and a band aid; the child will instantly feel better. There are those times when a kiss and a band aid simply do not cover the situation.
We read about kids contracting cancer more often these days. It seems like daily another child and another pair of parents are discovering that their lives are about to change forever. Cancer treatment will usually consist of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. All of these treatments are very hard for a child to bear and it can be equally hard on the parents, who must stand by and watch helplessly. As parents we are accustomed to being on top of our children’s wants and needs, and able to make any problem go away with a little TLC. This doesn’t work with cancer and we are unable to do anything about our precious child’s suffering.
Fortunately there are doctors working around the clock to find new ways to cure cancer. A tremendous amount of money is being sent from all over the world so doctors and researchers can devote all their time and energy into finding new ways to make a difference in the treatment of cancer. Thankfully there have been huge medical advances in the last several years.
Most years there are big corporations joining in the cause for cancer awareness by seeking donations from their customers to help cancer research. Companies like Wal-Mart and MacDonald’s ask their customers to donate an extra dollar or so at the check out counter to help fund research. Many customers who are able to donate do so. Obviously, one must always contribute to their own family’s support before helping others, but if each customer gave just a dollar, a huge difference could be made in discovering better cancer treatments and even a vaccine that would stop the disease before it started.
We do not spend our days thinking that our child’s latest illness may be diagnosed as cancer. There is no cancer in the family history, so the kids are safe. No parent ever expects their children to get really sick, let alone sick with cancer. The parents of a child who is diagnosed with cancer find their world full of continuous anxiety and alarm, and cannot stress enough the value of cancer research for their child and everyone else’s.
No matter who we are, we all agree that no child ever deserves to suffer, especially not from something as strenuous and painful as cancer. Thankfully millions of dollars are donated each year to cancer research. Sadly however, there are still many forms of rare cancer out there that have no cure. Even the cancers where there are treatment plans available, a patient is considered cured if they have been in remission for five years. Five years for our children is simply not enough.
All parents wish upon their kids a long and healthy life. We can’t always kiss away the fear or hurt, but we can all donate what we can to cancer research so that one day, doctors and scientists will find the answer to a permanent cure for cancer. Every child should grow up to be a healthy adult - every child.
