Barbara Calabrese was enjoying the beautiful Florida weather by herself on Tuesday because her husband was stuck indoors with allergies.
"He can't breathe. He just can't breathe in all of this pollen. He's very allergic," Calabrese said.
"This year, we're seeing one of the worst years we've experienced," Dr. Steven Rosenberg said.
Rosenberg said the cold weather that lasted into March kept tree pollen at a minimum. But once the warmer weather arrived, so did the allergies.
"People who were doing reasonably well during the beginning of the traditional allergy season now are experiencing a very bad flare up," Rosenberg said.
Sinus headaches, chest congestion, coughing and sneezing are all signs of an allergy to tree pollen. Rosenberg recommended avoiding the outdoors on windy days and making sure air conditioner filters inside the home are clean.
Rosenberg said the worst thing allergy sufferers can do this time of year is yard work.
"If you're going to do yard work, definitely wear eye goggles and a face mask so you don't inhale the pollen. Also, wear long-sleeved garments, so the pollen doesn't get on your skin," Rosenberg said.
Over-the-counter medications can provide relief for many allergy sufferers, but those with chronic conditions should get allergy injections once a month, according to Rosenberg.
There are still a couple of months of tree pollen left in Florida.
