A north east businesswoman has brought a branch of her new company to Carlisle - and it's not to be sniffed at.

Former practice nurse Sherleen Cuthbert has launched a weekly allergy clinic at the city's Caldew Hospital on Dalston Road as part of her Locallergy business.

She offers testing and advice for allergy and food intolerance sufferers and she reckons she has yet to come up against anyone she could not treat.

"One in four people is affected by an allergy," she said.

"The main issues are irritable bowel syndrome, which can be caused by things like wheat or lactose and things like asthma, eczema and house dust mite allergy.

"Everyone I've seen I've found some treatment for, no-one has beaten me yet.

"I believe the reason we have become so susceptible is because we are too clean now.

"An allergy is an immune response, but because our bodies are so clean we are not building up immunity to perfectly normal things entering our bodies."

The 36-year-old, who lives at North Walbottle, near Newcastle, qualified as a nurse in 1996. She joined the Nuffield private healthcare business last year and trained with Allergy UK, the UK's leading medical charity dealing with allergies.

She became a victim of the recession in January when she lost her job and decided to launch her own business.

She now runs clinics in Darras Hall, near Newcastle, and Cramlington, in Northumberland, as well as Carlisle.

"I saw a gap in the market in Carlisle and Cumbria," she said.

"No-one is offering this service in the county or even in Manchester, so there are very few places to go.

"I am a nurse, not a businesswoman, so the business side of things has been really difficult.

"I've a had a few sleepless nights worrying about whether it will work, but I think when it comes to people's health they are willing to pay.

"Finding a solution for someone with a food intolerance or an allergy can literally transform their lives.

"It can make them want to go out and live life again.

"I have seen people who are almost anorexic because they have been told they can't eat so many things, then I've found exactly what it is they are intolerant to and they become different people in weeks. Normally the treatment just takes one visit where I give a skin prick test and get a thorough history of the patient to determine what it is they are reacting to. The rest of the treatment can then be done on the telephone.

"I can't prescribe, but I can advise people and refer them to their GPs for medication if necessary."

Ms Cuthbert's clinics, for over-18s, run every Tuesday at the Caldew Hospital, Dalston Road, Carlisle.
