I smoke - I would like to quit. I do not breathe well now.I understand the health risks. It stinks to be addicted. I admit I am strongly addicted. I tried wellbutrin... cried for days... decided it was not a good drug for me.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States and we know these products are effective aids in helping people quit.?? Are you kidding me??? Psychosis & suicide (hence, sudden death) are to be weighed as potentially acceptable risks??? To me, this somewhat reflects the overall policy toward smokers: that they have less value & are to be scorned in our society. Smokers have become the scapegoats of our society... seems we always need to have a group to disdain so we can feel better about ourselves.

Why is that? It does not make anything or anyone better. It is in line with the policy of taxing cigarettes to such an extent that those addicted (& we are) become more stressed about the need to quit, which makes quitting all the harder.

Smoking is not good. Smokers should quit - for their own sake & for the sake of those who love them. But how about figuring out a health policy that will actually work - one that will help smokers quit. To do so, we will need to dismiss the "holier than thou" attitude of nonsmokers, remove the stigma, treat alcohol (which so often is the source of horrific sudden death to others... just look at the accidents this weekend!) on par with smoking (which would be easier if policy & law setters weren't so fond of their own imbibing), & work to find an effective stop-smoking treatment option (where suicide is not an acceptable trade-off) & continue to push smoking prevention programs to spare the next generation from this addiction.

On July 4th I celebrate 3 years since I quit smoking cold turkey. Here's the secret... stop smoking. I tried the patch/Zyban cocktail and all I got was a few nights waking up terrified in cold sweats like I was 5 years old. No thanks! It's just like the weight loss craze, everyone wants pills pills pills. Here's the magic formula that I'll give you for free. To lose weight: More more, eat less. To quit smoking: Stop buying smokes. It's that simple guys.
